Take a walk along Semaphore Road, and you will be rewarded with some charming signs, buildings, shops and plantings.
If you actually live on Semaphore Road, like we do, you end up walking it daily. We've lived here for almost 6 years, so that's roughly 2,190 times we've walked Semaphore Road... You'd think we'd have more photos! We actually do, but for the sake of this post, we chose a handful that show the variety of stuff you are likely to see on Semaphore Road.
Definitely one of the most "iconic" buildings on Semaphore Road is the old Odeon Cinema. Unfortunately, these types of buildings are quickly being demolished, and replaced with buildings like the one right next to it, Splash Apartments.
Semaphore Road, if I remember correctly, has at least two heritage churches on it. In this photo, you can see the old Baptist Church. A little further down is the old Masonic Hall.
Above is the old BankSA building. While not exactly a "heritage" or 19th Century building, it is a colorful and quirky building. Unfortunately, it is being "redeveloped"...
Semaphore Road has a few "old-school", vintage type shops, although they seem to be disappearing.
One of our favorite sights on Semaphore Road is this old billboard sign. Its like a giant piece of abstract art, giving Jackson Pollock a run for his money. The local council probably doesn't see it that way!
The stretch of Semaphore Road on the east side of the Outer Harbor line is quickly being redeveloped. This bit of Semaphore Road used to take us past the post-industrial, vacant lots of Gawler Reach, Fletcher's Slip, Glanville, and Birkenhead, where you could access the Anna Rennie Loop Path, and see unobstructed views of the Port River and Port Adelaide, across vacant lots filled with plants, birds and butterflies. The shed you see above has been demolished, and the entire area will soon be chock-a-block with houses, cars, people, dogs, noise, rubbish, etc... Oh well, we won't be walking along that part of Semaphore Road anymore!
We're lucky to still have a few quirky old buildings on Semaphore Road.
At the western end of Semaphore Road, there is an interesting mix of old and new, although the new seems to be winning out, unfortunately.
And finally, at the western end of Semaphore Road, is one of my favorite buildings of all time. The old cinema building, which now houses the Semaphore public library.
So take a stroll down Semaphore Road... you never know who you might run into!
