We are lucky enough to live steps from the Semaphore Foreshore. We have lived here for 6 years, and we walk the foreshore daily. That's over 2,100 times we have enjoyed Semaphore's foreshore. We have to hand it to the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, they do a good job when it comes to the foreshore. Let's hope they don't completely f*ck it up with their new "masterplan"...
In the above photos, you can see the foreshore during the day, and at night. In the first photo, taken on January 24, 2019, the temperature reached 49C/109F. It's a good thing we can go to the foreshore at night too.
There is a hill over looking the foreshore, where we took the first photos in this post. Up there is the famous "Time Ball Tower", which in days gone by was used to communicate with ships at sea.
The foreshore has its own train station, and its own train! The Semaphore steam train arrives and departs from Semaphore station, and one can travel on it all the way to Fort Glanville.
We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but the mini-golf and the waterslide at Semaphore foreshore are being taken away. The council has not revealed what will take its place, only that they have a secret "masterplan" ...
The real jewel in the crown of Semaphore's forshore is the open space footpaths. There is plenty of manicured turf, dune vegetation, and lighting. There are beautiful beach views. One can walk all the way from Noonie's at Semaphore South to the kiosk at Largs Bay. Our one big complaint? Sharing the footpath with bicycles, eScooters, gophers, dogs and dog poo.
Despite the council's best efforts, the Semaphore foreshore is swarming with dogs, dog owners, and dog poo.
During school holidays, that's 15 Dec to 1 Feb, the foreshore gets taken over by the Semaphore Summer Carnival. If you've got kids (we've got one), it's a blessing in disguise.
There is plenty of "heritage" to be seen at the foreshore, including the art deco Palais Hotel, the Semaphore War Memorial, and the Semaphore Gaol Cells.
Even on a cold, rainy, winter's day, the foreshore is a nice place to hang out. In fact, we like it better in the off season, when there are less dogs, people, noise and rubbish. Let's hope the City of PAE's "masterplan" is a good one.
